  2. Lullabye by Billy Joel

    Goodnight, my angel
    Time to close your eyes
And save these questions for another day
I think I know what you've been asking me
I think you know what I've been trying to say
I promised I would never leave you
    And you should always know
    Wherever you may go
    No matter where you are
I never will be far away

    Goodnight, my angel
    Now it's time to sleep
And still so many things I want to say
Remember all the songs you sang for me
When we went sailing on an emerald bay
And like a boat out on the ocean
    I'm rocking you to sleep
    The water's dark and deep
    Inside this ancient heart
You'll always be a part of me

    Goodnight, my angel
    Now it's time to dream
And dream how wonderful your life will be
    Someday your child may cry
And if you sing this lullabye
    Then in your heart
There will always be a part of me

    Someday we'll all be gone
But lullabyes go on and on...
    They never die
    That's how you
    And I
    Will be

  3. Allegiance
    by Michael Fournier

I first saw you as a child when I could barely stand.
Then I swore my first allegiance with my heart beneath my hand.
My father whispered in my ear how proud that I should be.
Because you are the symbol of a land that’s free.

As I grew I learned of all the things that you had done.
You’ve led the way to battle, brought home every fallen son.
We looked to you for hope, when there was none in sight.
We think back to Fort McHenry, when you made it through the night.

Now that I’m a man, I’ve sworn a sacred oath to you.
I’ll fight for your protection, and beliefs that I hold true.
You never asked for my respect although you have it all.
I vow that I’ll fight to the death to never let you fall.

The other day my son and I were walking down the street.
We stopped to pay you our respect when we heard retreat.
He asked me why we did it, my boy just didn’t see.
So I bent and whispered in his ear, like my father once did for me.

  4. Joseph Rodman Drake

When freedom, from her mountain height
Unfurled her standard to the air,
She tore the azure robe of night
And set the stars of glory there.
She mingled with its gorgeous dyes
The milky baldric of the skies,
Then from his mansion in the sun
    She called her eagle-bearer down
And gave into his mighty hand
The symbol of her chosen land.

  5. Back Against the Wall by Cage the Elephant

Tonight I'll have a look and try to find my face again
Buried beneath this house my spirit screams and dies again
Outback a monster wears a cloak of Persian leather
Behind the TV screen I've fallen to my knees

I said you got me where you want me again and I can't turn away
I'm hangin' by a thread and I'm feelin' like a fool
I'm stuck here in between the shadows of my yesterday
I wanna get away, I need to get away

Blanket of silence makes me wanna sink my teeth in deep
Burn all the evidence, a fabricated disbelief
Pull back the curtains took a look into your eyes
My tongue has now become a platform for your lies

I said you got me where you want me again and I can't turn away
I'm hangin' by a thread and I'm feelin' like a fool
I'm stuck here in between the shadows of my yesterday
I wanna get away, I need to get away

Now you know, yeah you got my back against the wall
Oh God, I ain't got no other place to hide
Chained down like a sittin' duck just waitin' for the fall
You know, yeah you got my back against the wall

Deep in the jungle camouflaged by all the fallen leaves
A hand holds up the sky while shamefully I make my plea
The alter's callin' but my legs won't seem to stand
Guess I'm a coward scared to face the man I am

I said you got me where you want me again and I can't turn away
I'm hangin' by a thread and I'm feelin' like a fool
I'm stuck here in between the shadows of my yesterday
I wanna get away, I need to get away

  6. Patriotic Pride
    By: Nichole Kaci McKnight

The grand old flag that flies outside.
Many fly you to show patriotic pride.
We know Betsy Ross sewed you up.
On the fourth of July fireworks do erupt.
The Declaration Of Independence was scribed by our forefathers.
We should never forget about our freedoms all sisters and brothers.
When the government is no longer for the people, just remember our past.
When there are no longer freedoms or rights for everyone, life isn't a blast.
Hail to the past, our forefathers, and freedom, my friends, let's hope our rights will never end.
Let's always be diligent of our forefathers, because as Americans we must always defend.

    Patriotic Shock
    By: Total Chaos

There's a problem with the government
    When the government's mad
    When the final solution comes
    It would be rad
    I don't care what the government's say
'Cuz it just don't matter now anyway
    I don't know if the government's true
    But the government's after you
    I don't need no politicians
They always make the wrong decisions
Don't even know wrong from right
Starting wars they don't even fight
I guess what it is I'm trying to say
Is that government's don't matter now anyway
    I don't know if the government's true
    But the government's after you.

"next to of course god america i
love you land of the pilgrlims' and so forth oh
say can you see by thw's early my
country 'tis of centuriesme and go
and are no more what of it we should worry
    in every language even deafanddumb
thy sons acclaim your glorious name by gorry
by jingo by gee by gosh by gum
why talk of beauty what could be more beaut-
iful than these heroic happy dead
who rushed like lions to the roaring slaughter
they did not stop to think they died instead
then shall the voice of liberty be mute?"
He spoke. And drank rapidly a glass of water

  9. Patriotism 01 Innominatus by Sir Walter Scott
BREATHES there the man with soul so dead,
Who never to himself hath said,
'This is my own, my native land!'
Whose heart hath ne'er within him burn'd
As home his footsteps he hath turn'd
From wandering on a foreign strand?
    If such there breathe, go, mark him well;
    For him no Minstrel raptures swell;
High though his titles, proud his name,
    Boundless his wealth as wish can claim;
Despite those titles, power, and pelf,
The wretch, concentred all in self,
    Living, shall forfeit fair renown,
And, doubly dying, shall go down
To the vile dust from whence he sprung,
    Unwept, unhonour'd, and unsung.

  10. Can't Stop: Red Hot Chili Peppers
Can't stop addicted to the shin dig
Cop top he says I'm gonna win big
Choose not a life of imitation
    Distant cousin to the reservation
Defunkt the pistol that you pay for
This punk the feeling that you stay for
In time I want to be your best friend
Eastside love is living on the westend
Knock out but boy you better come to
Don't die you know the truth is some do
Go write your message on the pavement
Burnin' so bright I wonder what the wave meant
White heat is screaming in the jungle
Complete the motion if you stumble
Go ask the dust for any answers
Come back strong with 50 belly dancers

    [Chorus:]
    The world I love
    The tears I drop
    To be part of
    The wave can't stop
Ever wonder if it's all for you
    The world I love
    The trains I hop
    To be part of
    The wave can't stop
Come and tell me when it's time to

Sweetheart is bleeding in the snowcone
So smart she's leading me to ozone
    Music the great communicator
Use two sticks to make it in the nature
    I'll get you into penetration
    The gender of a generation
The birth of every other nation
Worth your weight the gold of meditation
This chapter's going to be a close one
Smoke rings I know your going to blow one
    All on a spaceship persevering
Use my hands for everything but steering
Can't stop the spirits when they need you
Mop tops are happy when they feed you
    J. Butterfly is in the treetop
Birds that blow the meaning into bebop

    [Repeat Chorus]

Wait a minute I'm passing out
Win or lose just like you
    Far more shocking
    Than anything i ever knew
    How about you
    10 more reasons
Why i need somebody new just like you
Far more shocking than anything I ever knew
    Right on cue

Can't stop addicted to the shin dig
Cop top he says I'm gonna win big

Don't die you know the truth is some do
Go write your message on the pavement
Burnin' so bright I wonder what the wave meant

    Kick start the golden generator
Sweet talk but don't intimidate her
Can't stop the gods from engineering
Feel no need for any interfering
    Your image in the dictionary
This life is more than ordinary
Can I get 2 maybe even 3 of these
    Come from space
To teach you of the pliedes
Can't stop the spirits when they need you
This life is more than just a read thru...

  11. Civil war -guns n roses

Look at your young men fighting
    Look at your women crying
Look at your young men dying
The way they've always done before

Look at the hate we're breeding
Look at the fear we're feeding
Look at the lives we're leading
The way we've always done before

    My hands are tied
The billions shift from side to side
And the wars go on with brainwashed pride
For the love of God and our human rights
And all these things are swept aside
By bloody hands time can't deny
And are washed away by your genocide
And history hides the lies of our civil wars

    D'you wear a black armband
    When they shot the man
Who said "Peace could last forever"
    And in my first memories
    They shot Kennedy
I went numb when I learned to see
So I never fell for Vietnam
We got the wall of D.C. to remind us all
    That you can't trust freedom
When it's not in your hands
    When everybody's fightin'
    For their promised land

    And
I don't need your civil war
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor
    Your power hungry sellin' soldiers
    In a human grocery store
    Ain't that fresh
I don't need your civil war

Look at the shoes your filling
Look at the blood we're spilling
Look at the world we're killing
The way we've always done before
Look in the doubt we've wallowed
Look at the leaders we've followed
Look at the lies we've swallowed
And I don't want to hear no more

    My hands are tied
For all I've seen has changed my mind
But still the wars go on as the years go by
With no love of God or human rights
'Cause all these dreams are swept aside
By bloody hands of the hypnotized
Who carry the cross of homicide
And history bears the scars of our civil wars

"We practice selective annihilation of mayors
    And government officials
For example to create a vacuum
    Then we fill that vacuum
    As popular war advances
    Peace is closer" **

I don't need your civil war
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor
    Your power hungry sellin' soldiers
    In a human grocery store
    Ain't that fresh
And I don't need your civil war
I don't need your civil war
I don't need your civil war
    Your power hungry selling' soldiers
    In a human grocery store
    Ain't that fresh
I don't need your civil war
I don't need one more war

I don't need one more war
Whaz so civil 'bout war anyway

  12. Fight For Freedom by Manowar
There's a sound heard across the land
    It's heard across the sea
You'll only hear it if you listen with your hearts
And one day hope to be free

To hear the sound of freedom many gave their lives
They fought for you and me
Those memories will always live in silence
And now it's our time to be free

    [Chorus:]
Where the eagles fly - I will soon be there
If you want to - come along with me my friend
Say the words and you'll be free
From the mountains to the sea
    We'll fight for freedom again

Scream out loud for all the world to hear
From sea to shining sea ??
Let freedom ring and every man be king
To live as one through the years

    [Repeat chorus]

Now is the time we all must stand together
So raise your hands show them we are strong
Side by side the fight goes on forever
Marching to the battle with this song

    [Repeat chorus to fade]

  13. Excerpt from "Can I Live?" by J. Cole:

Like the phone when she heard the news
Her sister on the other line talking to her shoes
The only son, what a thing to lose
    More blacks singing more blues
    More people pouring more brews
Poor dude he was young like 21, straight up out that city that I'm from
A real smart dude, but his dudes they was dumb
He aint even get a chance to run
Before it landed in his lung
    God, breathe brotha.
His partner screaming “Don’t you freaking leave brotha!!”
Took off his shirt trynna stop the bleeding brotha, “Don’t you go!”
    But his life fading slow
Did I tell my mom I love her, do she know
Did I tell my baby sorry from before
Wont get to see my son grow
Lord I ain't ready to go
Can I live? Can I live? Dear Lord, Can I live?
    Can I live?

    Little and big secrets
    silence, unsharing
    from shame, for protection
    blank spots
    in the telling
    of our story

    Carved off areas
    sometimes casually shared
As if we knew, forgetting the secret
    the missing words
    names crossed from address books
    pain pushed down

    Missing memories
    scraps of childhood
    undiscussed.

  16. You are old, Father William
    Lewis Carroll

‘You are old, Father William,’ the young man said,
    ‘And your hair has become very white;
And yet you incessantly stand on your head -
Do you think, at your age, it is right?’

‘In my youth,’ Father William replied to his son,
    ‘I feared it might injure the brain;
But, now that I’m perfectly sure I have none,
Why, I do it again and again.’

‘You are old,’ said the youth, ‘as I mentioned before,
    And have grown most uncommonly fat;
Yet you turned a back-somersault in at the door -
Pray, what is the reason of that?’

‘In my youth,’ said the sage, as he shook his grey locks,
‘I kept all my limbs very supple
By the use of this ointment - one shilling the box -
Allow me to sell you a couple?’

‘You are old,’ said the youth, ‘and your jaws are too weak
    For anything tougher than suet;
Yet you finished the goose, with the bones and the beak -
Pray how did you manage to do it?’

‘In my youth,’ said his father, ‘I took to the law,
    And argued each case with my wife;
And the muscular strength, which it gave to my jaw,
Has lasted the rest of my life.’

‘You are old,’ said the youth, ‘one would hardly suppose
    That your eye was as steady as ever;
Yet you balanced an eel on the end of your nose -
What made you so awfully clever?’

‘I have answered three questions, and that is enough,’
Said his father; ‘don’t give yourself airs!
Do you think I can listen all day to such stuff?
Be off, or I’ll kick you down stairs!’

    (In relation to)
    The Old Man’s Comforts
    And How He Gained Them
    Robert Southey

‘You are old, father William,’ the young man cried,
    ‘The few locks which are left you are grey;
    You are hale, father William, a hearty old man;
Now tell me the reason, I pray.’

‘In the days of my youth,’ father William replied,
‘I remember’d that youth would fly fast,
And Abus’d not my health and my vigour at first,
That I never might need them at last.’

‘You are old, father William,’ the young man cried,
‘And pleasures with youth pass away.
    And yet you lament not the days that are gone;
Now tell me the reason, I pray.’

‘In the days of my youth,’ father William replied,
    ‘I remember’d that youth could not last;
I thought of the future, whatever I did,
That I never might grieve for the past.’

‘You are old, father William,’ the young man cried,
    ‘And life must be hast’ning away;
    You are cheerful and love to converse upon death;
Now tell me the reason, I pray.’

‘I am cheerful, young man,’ father William replied,
    ‘Let the cause thy attention engage;
In the days of my youth I remember’s my God.
And He hath not forgotten my age.’

  17. How sleep the brave by William Collins

HOW sleep the brave, who sink to rest
By all their country's wishes blest!
When Spring, with dewy fingers cold,
Returns to deck their hallow'd mould,
She there shall dress a sweeter sod
Than Fancy's feet have ever trod.

    By fairy hands their knell is rung;
    By forms unseen their dirge is sung;
There Honour comes, a pilgrim grey,
    To bless the turf that wraps their clay;
    And Freedom shall awhile repair
To dwell, a weeping hermit, there!

I like how in the beginning the person loves the life of being a rock-star and feels that this separates him from the rest of society and falls to drugs in the beginning. But, later on the person realizes his mistakes and acknowledges that he is just the same as everyone else in the end and deals with the same problem.

  19. @Family Secrets by Raymond A. Foss
This poem seems pretty interesting because of how truthful it is in the real world. Families tend to not shout out their family member's secrets to the world and let everyone know their shame. I guess it can be good to a certain point, but when you keep secrets from other family members things start to get out of hand.

I love this poem just because of the fact that Lewis makes fun of the 2nd poem so much that it's hilarious. The imagery that Lewis uses for the old man is so funny. It's a great poem to read in my opinion.

  21. @How sleep the brave by William Collins
it seems just a little bit hard to decipher completely what the poem means, but I think everyone can agree that this poem is talking about patriotism with the lives lost for the cause. There seems to be some mystical part underlying the poem and I can't put my finger on what it all means. Great patriotic poem.

  23. @Lullabye

This song is so sweet. It's a generic lullabye of comfort and a lighter feel as the person singing it is avoiding darker thoughts or questions the child may have about things that aren't good to think about before they fall asleep. The song is very hopeful for the child and speaks of their spirit or their memories living on through the lullabye no matter what happens. "No matter whereyou are I never will be far away" makes me think of when someone dies how other say they will always be in your heart.

  24. @Can't Stop

I love the rhyme scheme of this song; most of it's in couplets and it's upbeat and kind of goes along with that party wild angst that some people have and enjoy. I feel like it's saying go big or don't go at all. "This life is more than just a read through" kind of says that it's not just something you flip through and say "oh, how nice" it's something you want to remember and be glad about.

  25. @Civil War

The song has a powered message about how war is unnecessary and more damaging than the problem that caused war itself. I like how the civil part isn't referring to war within a country, but war between countries in one world. It makes every war more of a shame because we are fighting our own species our own brethren yet it's supposedly okay because we are separated by countries. It goes through the dark parts of war and makes them sound as bad as they are. The last line is a good punch, too, "what's so civil about war anyway?"

    ReplyDelete
  26. @Family Secrets

I like this poem because it really is easy to relate to whether or not people want to admit it because families have secrets that they don't tell other people and even secrets within them that certain family members don't know and this poem addresses that. It addresses how these secrets aren't decided at the kitchen table as secrets, they're simply omitted and forgotten, yet they still jump up at random moments. They're left out of stories told around the fire and they're left unmentioned. Names crossed out from address books could be family friends that aren't friends anymore and they don't mention why. Certain things that happened in a daughter or son's childhood that they don't remember but the parents do could also be a part considering the last stanza.

  27. @I like this song because it pays respects to the fallen soldiers in a way and helps stir up emotion in the reader. When he says "You'll only hear it [sound of freedom] if you listen with your hearts" it really shuts down any people that disagree with war because it is saying that if you not open minded to it the obviously your not going to accept it and realize what it really means.

  28. @THis American Ride:

I liked this song because it symbolizes the midset of many Americans because we know that some things, or better yet a great number of things we do arent good but we just kind of brush it off and say thats how it going to be and deal with it.

This song took a different approach to what many of the other ones did by saying that the government is wrong for involving themselves in war. I am in love with the line "Starting wars they dont even fight" because it was basically the main theme of the song and it helped put perspective on war.

I love this song so much! I'm so fond of how the song just expresses the writers emotion on how he is living the fast life and he is wondering if this is really what he wants. I think the song also has to deal with his problem with drugs for example when he said "I'll get you into to penetration, the gender of a generation" and "Smoke rings you know were going to blow some"
